Trade with other players, or at local seaports to get resources you might lack. The first player to achieve 10 points from a combination of roads, settlements, and special cards wins.

October 26, 2009: Our family LOVES this game. Though we're all over 12 years old, we wish we had discovered it several years ago -- our kids could have enjoyed it when they were 7. We love to do side-trading, and create alliances. We're much bigger fans of this than Monopoly, though there are some similar themes in the two games. It seems to demonstrate some basic levels of economics and world economy -- esp. the importance of resource control and ports/trade.
We're on the verge of buying an expansion pack so that we can play with more than 4 people -- we are planning to have other families over to play (and don't want to turn it over to ONLY the kids -- my husband and I just wish we had more time to play!).We have a new family tradition evolving in our home -- Tuesday evenings the kids get to design and make pizza for all of us for dinner (every one gets to put their own choice of toppings on), and then as we eat we play Catan! It's wonderful!Reader Rating:
October 17, 2009: This was a great family game! My husband and I played it with our 2 young adult children. It was fun for us as beginners and the enjoyment increased as we learned to develop various strategies. A game takes about an hour to 90 minutes play. Often we played a couple games a night. At first the game seems complicated, but it was very easy to learn by just playing. Our son introduced us to this game that he plays with friends. I am looking forward to inviting friends over for a game night.
