This item was a little disappointing...
In the mode where it helps the child to spell the word, it does not sound out the letter and say, for example, "find the letter that makes the "a" sound." It just says, "find the letter a."
Additionally, once the child has spelled out a word, it doesn't sound the word out, it just says what the word is.
Basically, this item does not teach phonics any more effectively than its single lettered counterpart, and will not actually help your child to read.

February 02, 2009: Fun and interactive phonics toy from Leapfrog is a novel way to teach at the refridgerator door. Your in the kitchen anyway. Why not make it a learning time?
