June 19, 2008: I brought this Activity Kit along on a week's vacation with Matt, almost 4, and Sara, just completing Kindergarten. Matt's mom had asked me to help him with his alphabet. Since Sara already knew the alphabet, I didn't anticipate that it would have appeal for her, but I was wrong. It was a big hit with both. It provided a wonderful time each day for the two to work together, each at his/her own level - only they regarded it as play. I was careful to put the Kit away when they tired of it, so that they would ask me for it the following day, which they did. Matt enjoyed using the markers included in the Kit to trace over each letter on the left side while Sara asked for help in reading the words beginning with the target letter listed on the right side. The Kit invites children to draw and color pictures illustrating the words. While Matt traced, Sara drew an apple for a, a boat for b, etc. The Kit helped Matt learn his ABC's while providing the opportunity for Sara to learn to read new words and to connect initial letters with sounds. When they noticed other, similar Kits listed on the back, Sara said, "Look, Matt, we have the FIRST in a SERIES!" They asked me to buy other Kits for them and I will. The quality of the materials is very high and the chance for two kids, operating at different academic levels, to enjoy and benefit from the same set of materials as they interact peacefully with one another is.... priceless! The Kit can be enjoyed by children in preschool up through third grader. Struggling readers beyond third grade can also benefit.
