Themed chess sets are as old as chess itself.
The first chess pieces were hand carved to represent the required pieces and they reflected the talent and imagination of the artist creating a set of pieces for his patron. Over time chess players brought together their personal interests and their love of chess with specific themed chess sets.
This gorgeous Limited Edition Authors Chess Set reproduces the stars of nineteenth century American literature as premium sculpted and crafted triple weighted chess pieces suitable for display in the finest home or office.

May 19, 2009: This chess set is more about novelty than anything else. As already mentioned in the other review, the pieces are crafted to represent the authors quite well. However, the material used is not stone, or granite, or marble, or alabaster, or any other such sturdy material one might expect for such a price. A cursory look around the internet at other chess sets shows that similarly priced chess sets offer better construction materials (such as the materials I listed and more.) The game board is also not any fancy style of wood, and is most likely poplar (cheap wood). The squares on the board are a vinyl looking overlay that is merely glued to the surface of the wood. Essentially, this set is overpriced for what you're getting. But, if having a chess set of famous authors is worth the price to you in and of itself, then knock yourself out.
